What’s with the hats?
Google is king when it comes to developing an online presence for brands. Keep Google happy, and your online presence is much more visible to those searching for the content you offer. How exactly does Google decide which sites rank higher than others? Google bots crawl the content on a website, indexing the things that it sees the content is then processed through Google's ever-evolving algorithms in order to determine which sites have relevant information based on a user’s search query (Fox, 2008). An entire industry has been born out of satisfying Google; it is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short. SEO firms work with the content on a site to make it easier for Google's bots to find the information and tailor it to Google's latest algorithm releases (Fox, 2008). There are two types of SEO, Black Hat SEO, and White Hat SEO. The names derive from old western movies and shows like The Lone Ranger. The heroes wore white hats, and the bad guys wore black hats. The idea is the same when it comes to SEO; some guys are heroes and perform SEO the right way, while others use short cuts and tricks to help improve Google rankings (Fox, 2008).
White Hats
White Hat SEO firms improve website rankings by working with Google, not against Google. They view Google as a partner and work hard to adjust websites to the Google algorithm’s liking ("Consumer Alert," 2012). White Hat SEOs use content-driven strategies and indexing rules that work with Google's algorithms helping to improve Google Search Rankings ("Consumer Alert," 2012). There is no shortcut to improved rankings, but there is a set of best practices that, over time, will reward content creators if done correctly.
Black Hats
Black Hat SEOs are quite the opposite; rather than treating Google as an SEO partner, they see Google as the opposition that must be defeated under any means necessary. Black Hats find a pattern in Google ranking data and develop short cuts to circumnavigate the honest SEO process. Black Hats employ techniques like Keyword stuffing a trick in which popular keywords like 'Brad Pitt Movies" are stuffed or hidden on website landing pages (Fox, 2008). Google bots crawl the page and see text that is relevant to popular searches improving that site's rankings (Fox, 2008). Black Hats also employ linking schemes and content auto-population schemes to improve content and backlink numbers for websites (Fox, 2008).
Why you should ride off into the sunset with White Hat SEO
The news, however, isn't all bad. Much like the old westerns, the white hats always win. While Black Hat SEO's are smart and crafty, Google is always smarter (“Consumer Alert,” 2012). Once Google detects a pattern of SEO tricks, it releases a new algorithm, making adjustments for black hat tricks it has identified (“Consumer Alert,” 2012). When Google releases a new algorithm, any site using a black hat trick is usually penalized in rankings and may even have their website removed from the Google directory, rendering it completely invisible on search engine queries (“Consumer Alert,” 2012). When Google released it's Hummingbird algorithm, many sites that were utilizing backlink farms and scams were immediately buried in the search results by sites that used proper backlinking strategies (“Google Hummingbird,”2013). This is why you should always utilize White Hat strategies. The short term gains of Black Hat strategies may be enticing, but in the long run, the Black Hat's will do more damage to your online reputation than good (Fox,2008).
